924 Gilman, a.k.a. the Alternative Music Foundation, is an all-ages, volunteer run music and performance club that is famous for it's role in the punk rock movement. Many locals will recall seeing dozens and sometimes hundreds of goth and punk teenagers lined up outside the club on a Friday or Saturday evening. The place still draws a gritty crowd of punk and grunge enthusiasts of all ages. No alcohol is sold there, however you can buy bottled water, juice and sodas as well as a limited range of snack foods and candy.
The Ashkenaz Music and Dance Community Center is a nonprofit venue that has won numerous awards. It offers nightly live music, as well as dance and movement classes and benefit shows. This is also a family friendly place, with children 12 and under getting in for free. They have a café open during performances that serves soda, beer, wine and vegetarian fare. After 9 pm, there is a parking lot that opens up across the street that is available for customers to use.
