Humane Society of Berks County was established in 1889 and is based in Reading, Pa., offering shelter to dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and ferrets. Its facility has kennel space for dogs, cat adoption room, lobby area and offices. The shelter conducts a humane education program in schools and for civic groups, offers puppy kindergarten classes and operates a low-cost neuter clinic. It receives funding from the city, county and some of the boroughs and townships, but it relies predominantly on the donations and gifts of the general public for its operating capital. The Hispanic Center of Reading and Berks County has been serving at this community for the last 40 years. It has been the primary agency that serves the rapidly growing Latino population, which according to the last census figures represents 70% of the City of Reading. It is one of the most diverse Latino populations in the North East area of the United States. According to our last month report we are serving approximately 1, 100 clients a month. The Hispanic Center offers social services, information and referral, and works to support other organizations in the County.
