The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department serves the Village of Dexter's law enforcement and public safety needs. Since the village does not have its own police department, it has a contract with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's substation is located in the same building as the Dexter Area Fire Department, and it serves the village and surrounding townships.
There are nine deputies, including one school liaison; four deputies patrolling the three municipalities; "COPS" (community oriented police) working in conjunction with the individual municipalities on special problems, crime prevention and other local law enforcement activities; and one sergeant.
