The Butcher family has been involved in the air conditioning and heating industry for over 56 years ; however, our family business has been evolving for closer to 85 years through three generations of Butchers. Dixie Electric was founded by the first group of Butcher brothers immediately after World War I. Lawrence, Edwin, and Jerry Butcher got their start in the emerging automobile electronics industry in the 1920s before residential air conditioning existed. From there, the brothers began distributing appliances, such as home radios and white goods. Lawrence Butcher sold his first air conditioning unit in the 1930s. This became the building block for future growth in the air conditioning industry. Building a strong relationship with customers and within the community, providing excellent workmanship and customer satisfaction, Lawrence Butcher created a foundation for the loyalty still received to this day. AfterLawrences retirement in 1949, his sons, Warren, Matt and Tom Butcher formed a new company, Butcher Refrigeration, for the purpose of supplying refrigeration, heating and air conditioning equipment. In 1955, the second-generation Butchers decided to specialize in air conditioning equipment sales, both retail and wholesale. The company name was changed from Butcher Refrigeration to Butcher Air Conditioning. At this time, the company became the distributor for General Electric air conditioning products in Southern Louisiana. The General Electric brand was changed to Trane in 1980. By 1990 a third generation of Butchers brothers had entered the business. Toms son Bobby had joined Butcher Air Conditionings retail department, while another son, John had joined the wholesale division. In 1990, this wholesale division was split off to form a completely separate company, Butcher Distributors Inc Simultaneously with this change, Butcher Distributors Trane distribution territory was expanded to cover the majority of Louisiana and Mississippi. In spite of the dramatic changes weve been through over the years, one thing has remained constant. Our company still embraces the philosophy of business which made the original Butchers successful: to provide only top quality products at a fair price and to back these sales with support unmatched in the industry.
