Situated just minutes from both the north and south side of downtown, between the Lehigh River and the historic Lehigh Canal, Sand Island Park offers a wide variety of facilities for varied interests. Lighted tennis and basketball courts are among its featured attractions. It also has playground equipment, walking and biking paths, a boat launch and a splendid view of South Mountain. The island is also home to the Charles A. Brown Ice House, an indoor performance venue and a former ice factory for city residents.
The largest and most centrally-located of the township's parks, this one features lighted tennis and basketball courts, ballfields and a 1-mile long paved fitness trail with 20 exercise stations along it. It also has picnic pavilions, volleyball courts and ample parking.
Sun Inn Preservation Association is an nonprofit organization. It maintains the Sun Inn, a historic building going back to 1758. It hosted prominent individuals such as Benjamin Franklin, Martha Washington, George Washington, John Adams, Samuel Adams, Ethan Allen, Henry Laurens, Richard Lee, Marquis de Lafayette and many others. Today, guided tours are offered of the building and its grounds. It also has a restaurant serving dinner on select days of the week.
The Bethlehem Township Police Department consists of 34 full-time sworn officers, including a chief, a captain, three sergeants, three corporals, one detective, two investigators and 23 patrolmen. It provides protection for all 15 square miles of the township, which includes two large shopping malls, several smaller strip malls and two business/industrial parks.
