Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts at the Brooklyln Campus of Long Island University manages to provide an intimate space despite its large scale. LAVA Dance Company has been performing around New York City for 10 years. The company's work features athletic prowess combined with social and interpersonal commentary, challenging the viewer to question his or her assumptions. Dancing and acrobatics classes for kids and adults are offered twice a year, in both spring and fall.
Formerly the Majestic, this theater was abandoned in 1968 and purchased by Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in 1987. Originally a playhouse then a movie theater, BAM renovated it, retaining much of the well-worn interior, lending it an atmosphere that harks back to the theaters of old. Theater productions are held here in the 874-seat auditorium, and the space is available for rental.
The Gallery Players theater has been staging classic and contemporary plays and musicals since 1967. The 99-seat theater is located in a basement-level space in Park Slope. Patrons are advised to arrive at least 10 minutes before curtain. Tickets can be purchased in advance; any remaining tickets are available for purchase at the door with cash only.
