The Police Athletic League (PAL) provides numerous after-school and summer activities for more than 500 area children and teens. The league targets the prevention of juvenile crime through education and self esteem building. PAL is a registered non-profit 501c3 organization that partnered with the Tampa Police Department to mentor youth. After-school activities include: a study hall period, cheerleading classes, drama classes, cooking classes, dance classes, gymnastics, arts and crafts, board and video games, social skills class, playground sports, martial arts, a drug prevention program, garden club, crime prevention class and chorus. The after-school program's monthly fee is based on a sliding scale $150 to $200 per child. There is a 10 percent discount for a second child. A $30 registration fee per family is due at the time of registration. Snacks are provided. After school pick up is available from the following schools: Mendenhall, Twin Lakes, Oak Grove, Richardson Academy, Egypt Lake, Forest Hills, Seminole Elementary and HDA Ramp for any Magnet school. Hillsborough County school buses drop off from Memorial Middle School. Summer programs typically run June through August. Past field trips have included visits to a cattle ranch, laser tag centers, nature centers, bowling alleys, swimming, arts workshops and ice skating rinks. The cost is on a sliding scale based on household annual income. The fee covers the costs of field trips, a T-shirt, lunch and loads of other fun activities for 9½ weeks.
