Bedford-Stuyvesant has two police precincts, 79 and 81. The New York City 81st Police Precinct is located at 30 Ralph Ave., on the northwest corner of Ralph and Gates avenues. The commanding officer of the 81st precinct is Deputy Inspector Juanita N. Holmes. The role of the police department in every neighborhood is to provide a safe environment for its residents, their guests and business owners. Each precinct accomplishes this through combatting violent crimes and narcotic sales and use, and addressing quality of life.
Precinct 81 holds its monthly meetings, which are open to the community, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
The Village police cover approximately seven square miles providing traffic enforcement, emergency response and a detective's division. The police department also oversees village code enforcement and the police station which includes a dispatch room and antenna for all of the village's emergency services. The chief is Thomas Cummings.
Almost entirely hidden by shrubbery, the Mineola Auxiliary Police Department headquarters is situated just to the south of a recharge basin, and could often be mistaken for a pump house. Public access to the building is only available through the rear entrance.
Equivalent to a neighborhood watch, the main job of the all-volunteer Auxiliary Police is to prevent crime, but members are not armed like traditional police officers of the Towns of North Hempstead and Hempstead.
Any Nassau County resident between the ages of 17 and 65 are eligible to become a member of an auxiliary police unit. All applicants must first attend classes and training at the Nassau County Police Academy, where they are taught self-defense, first aid, CPR and the use of a nightstick. Only those over the age of 21 are allowed to work patrol duties, which is done through use of an auxiliary police car. Members aged 17 to 21 are assigned to the radio communications unit.
The 76th Precinct station is centrally located on Union and Henry Street in Carroll Gardens. The Precinct Community Council meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30.
