Philosophy Statement Gan Yaffa believes that a good education for young children requires an appropriate developmental curriculum for a child’s holistic growth in all areas: physical, emotional, social, moral, and cognitive. An appropriate developmental curriculum for young children takes into consideration two dimensions: age and individualism. Gan Yaffa’s curriculum is based on a number of theories about early childhood education including Piaget, Montessori, Erikson, and Froebel. Young children learn best through exploration and active interaction with adults and other children. Children learn from concrete, real and relevant materials. We believe that the role of the preschool teacher is crucial for the young child’s concept about school, society, self, and learning. Our teachers help foster a positive, successful and confident experience. As a result, children grow eager to learn and develop. Our teachers provide a variety of activities and materials and sequentially increase the difficulty and complexity of the activity as the child develops an understanding of new skills. Our teachers are academically prepared to provide for a wide range of developmental interests and abilities, according to the child’s chronological age. At Gan Yaffa, the teachers are sensitive to the individual needs of children who exhibit non-traditional interests and skills. In our school the adult-interaction takes place in a warm, safe and trustworthy environment, where adults are committed to respond quickly and directly to the children’s needs. We provide assessments and recommend placements in a timely manner for every child of legal entry as well as references for parents who need special services. We believe that a good education program must include the family of a young child as a major component of the child’s development. In our school teachers and parents meet regularly to share observations and suggestions about how children can reach their full potential.

The mission of the Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center is to provide a family education center and community gathering space based in Jewish values and tradition. The SIJCC celebrates an expression of Judaism that welcomes people of all backgrounds. For the past 59 years the SIJCC has served the Jewish Community of the Silverlake/Hollywood area. Built in 1951 with initial funds raised by local members, the responsibilities of running the center were eventually given over to the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Los Angeles ( JCCGLA ). In 2001, facing fiscal challenges, JCCGLA was no longer able to fund the center and its preschool. Unwilling to lose the heart of their community, the pre-school director, teachers and parents banded together, forming the non-profit Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center. Their efforts and generous support from the Episcopal Church of Los Angeles ensured that the center could remain open. Funds to purchase the building from the JCCGLA were eventually raised. The efforts of the founding board of directors and its President, Janie Shulman ensured the preservation and growth of the SIJCC.

Just Like Moms Preschool was founded in 1979 by Eleanora Korol and Marina Podelko, two women of European descent with backgrounds in education and child development. Having come to California the year before, we saw a need in the Hollywood/Los Angeles area, for a preschool and kindergarten that focused on teaching and child development instead of simply babysitting your kids. Our ambition was to create an environment that fostered growth and challenged kids to reach ever higher both academically and socially. To build a preschool in the tradition of the best European schools, without being tied to aging curricula. We wanted to add to childrens experiences and do everything we could to provide a nurturing and safe environment for them to grow and enjoy.
