Child Learning Centers provide preschool teaching and preparation for any child in the Stamford area ages three or four years old. With 14 accredited affiliations in the area, this particular branch of service located on Hillandale Avenue between Wenzel Terrace and Holcombe Avenue specializes in the Stamford School Readiness Program. Subjects and programs that are taught include math, reading, social studies, technology, science, art, music, cooking and woodworking. Other services provided include English as a second language as well as kindergarten registration which is available on site. Child Learning Centers of Stamford has also obtained significant relationships with local libraries and museums to enhance the overall learning process.
The Children's School in North Stamford offers a Montessori-based program that aims to helps students explore their skills and interact in social situations. The Children's School operates as a modern one-room schoolhouse where students in preschool through third grade are encouraged to approach educational materials independently. Children rotate between group and individual lessons, which cover all major subjects including language arts, math, reading, science and social studies. Teachers also rotate between groups depending on the needs of the students. The school provides numerous activities, including an after-school program for children and a lecture series for parents.
Founded in 1970, The Learning Center at Piper's Hill provides a nurturing and educational experience for preschool-aged children. With a mission to "meet the individual child care needs of the expanding Stamford community in a family-like environment," Piper's Hill treats each student as an individual and gives each one a chance to grow in a developmentally appropriate environment.
The Tender Loving Care Academy was founded in 1998 and can be found near the corner of Strawberry Hill Avenue and Colonial Road. The institution accepts children under 5 years old and teaches them motor skills, arts, crafts and science among other things. The facility includes a backyard play area that uses rubber mulch for safety reasons. It also has bicycles and tricycles and other toys for the kids to use.
The Italian Center of Stamford (IC) serves Stamford and the surrounding towns with numerous recreational and educational activities for people of all ages. The club is located on twenty-eight acres of land in North Stamford.
A general membership provides individuals and families with access to an indoor pool, three outdoor pools, tennis and basketball courts, an indoor gym and a miniature golf course. The athletic department hosts personal-training sessions, a swim team and birthday parties. There's also a men's club, which offers its members exclusive locker rooms, steam rooms and golf outings.
General members also receive discounts on IC's licensed Nursery School and Kiddie Camp for three to six-year olds. Day Camp is for children entering kindergarten through 6th grade. Extended hours are also available.
IC runs a banquet and conference center for weddings, corporate affairs and other special events. IC can accommodate up to 600 guests, and clients have three spacious rooms to choose from. IC also hosts outdoor events on its picnic grounds. Invited guests have exclusive access to a pool, tennis courts and other amenities.
Glenbrook Community Center, which operated as Glenbrook School until the 1920s, is the site of multiple organizations, including Activities for Kids, which offers children ages 2-12 various pre-school (Playschool), after-school and summer camp options and the Re-Al Club, which offers assistance with alcohol accidition, as well as various exercise classes for senior citizens and Zumba lovers.
Founded in 1854, the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford is well-known in the city for its unique structure, which was built in 1954 and has earned Church landmark status. Known as "the Fish Church," First Presbyterian's building is shaped like a fish and features beautiful stained glass windows and a 32-foot high wooden cross placed in front. The church offers a worship service on Sunday as well as Sunday School, and is known for hosting several missionary trips throughout the year to New Orleans.
The church also runs a nursery school for children, ages three to five. Classes are held in the church's education area and children are educated in various areas of study, including music, science, reading and art.
Operated by The Sisters, Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts, since 1962, Our Lady of Grace Preschool & Kindergarten provides children ages 3 to 6 with a quality early education in a religious setting, as well as a nurturing environment that working parents can depend on. The daily schedule includes structured work periods, music, outdoor playground activities and nap time. Students are also taught proper health and work habits. Our Lady of Grace also offers a summer camp for girls in grades 1 through 8. The Sisters, Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts, also operate Villa Divino Amore Nursery School on Hope Street and other schools in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
