Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was established on November 1, 1934, by the States Commissioner of Education. The district was known as C.H.S.D. 3 until May 1973, when it adopted the name reflecting its geographic location, a change that was required of all districts by the State Education Department.

The district comprises the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, Merrick Avenue Middle School, Grand Avenue Middle School, Sanford H. Calhoun High School, John F. Kennedy High School and Mepham High School.

The Harold D. Fayette Elementary School was built in 1950, and serves 300 students in K - 6th grade in North Merrick. Howard Merims is the principal of the school.

There is a PTA that handles fundraisers and also serves the community, through their coats for the homeless program and toy drives. The PTA sponsors the Fall Festival, and the end of the year Fun Day. Students may participate in a walking club at lunchtime.

Students who participate in the WINGS program, for gifted students, are bused to H.D. Fayette Elementary to participate in the program. The Bellmore-Merrick aftercare program is held at the school, for those needing child care (ages k - 6), for a fee.

The school utilizes smartboard technology in select classrooms. Also, ESL is offered, and special ed students are supervised through the inclusion program.
