The Diocese of Allentown, which comprises Lehigh, Northampton, Berks, Carbon and Schuylkill counties, has its administrative offices in a section of the Jaindl building off Tilghman street. About 272,000 Catholics reside in the diocese, which was established by Pope John XXIII in 1961. It now maintains 104 parishes, 48 elementary schools, eight high schools and two colleges. In 2009, Bishop John O. Barres was installed as bishop, the fourth to serve the diocese.
