Started as a broadsheet publisher in 1998, The Brooklyn Rail is a full-service, nonprofit publication house that publishes a monthly journal. Its journal features a range of political and literary essays, art criticism, in-depth interviews, original fictions and poetries, as well as film, music, dance, theater and book reviews. The publication provides an open forum for criticism of arts, politics and culture. The Brooklyn Rail also prints manifestoes, hard-edged position pieces and telling interviews. It has more than 30,000 readers in Manhattan and Queens, N.Y. The publication is funded by private donations. It has received Utne Independent Press Award in 2002 and 2003. The Brooklyn Rail maintains a presence in Brooklyn, N.Y.
