Established in 1984, Waldorf School of the Peninsula offers a holistic education that strives to help children develop their hearts and their minds. It aims to help children develop confidence and self-discipline as well as the ability to think critically and analytically, to work independently and with others, and to develop an appreciation of and flair for creativity and artistic expression. Almond Elementary School is one of seven elementary schools in the Los Altos School District. It is a California Distinguished School, located just a mile from the downtown center of Los Altos.
It received an Academic Performance Index ranking of 9 out of 10 for the 2009-10 school year. Its 2009 API base was 962.
In addition to traditional classes, students can participate in chorus, the recycle club or a variety of other school activities during the school day. The school benefits from its proximity to Los Altos High School through performances by the school's well-known Main Street Singers and the band on Walk to School Day.
After-school activities and clubs include Spanish, Mandarin, French, Hindi, chess, drama, flag football and basketball.
It is the purpose at Los Altos Christian Schools to provide a quality education in a Christian atmosphere. Los Altos Christian Schools reflect a return to Biblical principles, Christian morals, a conservative philosophy and personal integrity. Clear behavioral expectations and individual accountability are emphasized. The school has been providing education since 1981. Los Altos Christian Schools offers preschool, elementary school and middle school on one campus.
Gardner Bullis School is one of seven elementary schools in the Los Altos School District. The school opened in 2008 on the site of the former Bullis Purissima School, which the district closed in 2003 due to budget cuts. The closure of the only public school left in Los Altos Hills was marked by controversy, and the opening of the new school on the old site was celebrated by residents eager to see a school there once more.
Gardner Bullis had a 2009 base Academic Performance Index score of 968.
Los Altos Hills residents currently in the Palo Alto Unified School District are allowed to transfer their students to Gardner Bullis.
The school offers "Grizzly Academy," enrichment programs before and after school hours, for a fee. Programs range from chess, science, Mandarin, Spanish, chorus and theater, among others.
Georgina Blach Intermediate School is one of two junior high schools in the Los Altos School District. After its renovation several years ago, the school became recognized as one of the greenest and most energy-efficient in the district and its sustainable design by architect Lisa Gelfand was recognized in the Great Places Awards by the Environmental Design Research Associates. PG&E used Blach for a energy demonstration project.
The school's mural program, run by English teacher Valerie Lipinski (who has a degree in art) adorns the school with students' interpretations of famous works of art, by artists from Raphael to Pablo Picasso.
Egan Junior High School, located in the northern part of the city, is one of two in the Los Altos School District. It was selected a California Distinguished School in 1988 and is designated a Sustained Distinguished School.
It had a 2009 Academic Performance Index base score of 954.
Egan has an active PTA and provides information for parents to get involved to help the school in a variety of ways on its Web site. There is also a Los Altos Special Education PTA to foster communication and share information. Its leadership committee sponsored the adoption of a completely new special education curriculum for all grades for the Fall 2010.
The principal is Brenda Dyckman.
The Pinewood School has a calm and engaging atmosphere, to help children develop into well-rounded, insightful, self-motivated and respectful indivduals. In addition to its core curriculum, Pinewood has programs for theater, music and visual arts, and interscholastic athletics. The Middle Campus, located on Fremont Avenue, serves Grades 3 through 6.
