Founded in 1924, Thomson Elementary School was named after Albert E. Thomson, the first North Andover soldier killed in World War I. Thomson grew up on Waverley Road, where the school was first built. In 1999, the current building was constructed right next to where the original one stood.
The good people at Windrush are a breed apart. This not-for-profit equestrian farm doubles as a school dedicated to helping those dealing with physical, learning or emotional disabilities. Windrush claims to be one of the first "therapeutic equestrian centers" in the country and can trace its roots back to 1964.
Located on 35 acres in both North Andover and Boxford, and abutting 160 acres of conservation lands, Windrush has various offerings depending on the needs of their students. When the Annie L. Sargent Elementary School opened 15 years ago, it was the first new elementary school to open in North Andover in 38 years. The school is named after Annie Laura Sargent, a local legend in the town's educational system who served as a teacher, principal and School Committee member, and was the first woman ever elected to public office in North Andover in the 1930s.
