St. Matthew Cooperative Nursery is a nursery program for three, four and five year old children. It is run by the St. Matthew Lutheran Church and is located at the church. Classes are held from September through May. The school features a playground, computer, chapel and music program. Students are also taken on field trips throughout the year. The school is centered around a teaching philosophy that involves significant interactions between the teacher, parent and child. Children must be toilet trained to attend.
With a grammar school located in Abingdon, the upper school, which meets in The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, offers a private education all the way through 12th grade. The institution exists "to glorify God by assisting parents in training their children to be Biblically-minded servant-leaders through a Reformed, Christ-centered, classical education." A few sports teams are offered in all three seasons, as well as a student government association. There is a $100 registration fee, $100 admissions testing fee and $200 uniform fee, among other fees including about $150 for books.
Sharing the same property as its high school, Patterson Mill is the newest public middle school in the county. Principal Wayne Thibeault and his school boast state-of-the-art facilities that give students the ability to enhance their education. The middle and high school both have an impressive student-to-computer ratio of 1:1.
