The only school in Queens with a 100 percent passing rate on 2010 standardized math exams, The Lutheran School of Flushing heralds itself as a caring and loving facility. The school's graduation rate also stands at 100 percent.
Reputed for being a warm and open community that welcomes all Jewish worshippers, Chabad is a large facility that offers a bevy of programs and opportunities to participate in Jewish life. It offers Bar and Bat Mitzvah training, an adult education center, summer camps and a Judaic library filled with holy books. Preschool and half- or full-day child care is also available. The center's motto is learning through "experimentation, experience and sensory explanation."
Kappa Academy is a tutoring center that serves high school-aged students. Students can receive help in reading, mathematics, English and SAT prep. The center is open for study Mondays through Fridays, and tutoring classes take place Saturdays.
Special programs at PS 31 Bayside include ballroom dancing facilitated by the American Ballroom Theater. If that's not the kind of challenge your child might seek, he or she can study architecture and design home floor plans.
Of parents surveyed by the Department of Education, 94% responded that they were satisfied with the education their child had received here in 2010.
Marie Curie Middle School 158 has magnet classes in math, science and gifted and talented classes, and technology instruction to supplement the gifted and talented classes. Students have placed first and second in the Math Counts competition and have earned gold and silver awards from the New York State School Music Association. Parent satisfaction with MS 158 has been high for the past several years, according to a Department of Education survey. MS 158 has many different after school programs.
The Lowell School Elementary/Middle School, a school serving special learning needs children through grade 8, is located in Bayside. Its sister high school of the same name is in Flushing.
In addition to learning disabled students, the Lowell School student body encompasses speech and health impaired, as well as emotionally disturbed students.
Arts, music, technology and reading programs, along with career development are offered along with speech and occupational therapy and counseling.
In a 2010 survey by the Department of Education, 97 percent of parents said they were satisfied with the education their child had received that year at PS 169. This preschool through elementary school's satisfaction ratings by parents have been in the high 80's and 90's since at least 2008. Of teachers surveyed, 96 percent believe that order and discipline are maintained at PS 169.
P.S. 41 Crocheron has the distinction of being a nationally recognized as a No Child Left Behind "Blue Ribbon School" in 2007. An NYPD security guard is posted at the front entrance, but the school--based on its environs--doesn't seem to need it; the 2009-2010 Department of Education's Accountability Report scored PS 41 a 9.3 out of 10 for safety and respect. Academic expectations, communication and engagement were also rated very high.
