Franco American Club, located in the heart of downtown Meriden, celebrates the rich heritage of the French in North America. There is a large gathering space inside the building that is open for group gatherings and social functions within the community. Valentin Karate has been around for 20 years and practices the martial arts discipline of Tang Soo Do, which originated in Korea. The goal is to teach patience, concentration, humility, self-discipline, self-control and respect. Capoeira is also taught at Valentin. Massage and body work also available by appointment.
The Meriden YMCA is a non-profit organization that strives to better the surrounding community. The large facility offers gym equipment, for both strength and cardio workouts, a full-size pool and fitness classes. Children's programs and camps are available throughout the year. Student, senior, and family membership discounts are available.
United Rhythms offers a variety of classes including hip hop, concert/music video, ballet and pointe, contemporary, lyrical, modern, tap and tumbling for individuals from age three to adult. United Rhythms also offers photography, custom clothing and costumes, DJ services and set designs. There is also a full-service salon at the studio that is open to all students and their friends and family.
Meriden Dance Center offers ballet, pointe, lyrical, jazz, tap and hip hop dance classes starting as early as age three. Group classes are offered as well as private classes for one to three students. The dance school year is in session from September to June. Students pay annual tuition, but there are payment options available.
Beat the Street is a community center offering boxing, hip-hop dance, music fitness, community-service projects and tutoring. Beat The Street keeps kids busy doing positive things and contributing to the community. The center does not operate on a weekly schedule throughout the year; hours vary depending on event. Beat The Street is open primarily during the school year.
Rosehaven Stables, built in 1997, sits on 10 acres of farmland. In addition to a 14-stall barn, the facility has indoor and outdoor riding arenas as well as five grass paddocks and one sand paddock.
Rosehaven provides horseback riding lessons for children and adults, horse boarding and pony rides for children's parties. It does not offer trail riding.
Run by husband-and-wife team Kevin and Rose Green and their daughter Lyndsi, the stables are open year round. Summer equestrian seminars for kids run weekdays from 9am to noon.
Club 24, formerly Cardio Express, is a standard gym with a variety of strength-training equipment and cardio machines. The equipment is in great condition and many of the machines are new. The gym is spacious and open, and has good ventilation.
Silver City Gun Club is a .22-caliber pistol and rifle club. There is also an air pistol shooting program. The club hosts steel plate practices and matches that are open to the public. It has an indoor range that is open throughout the year. The facility is great for both experienced shooters and beginners who wish to develop their skills. NRA-certified instructors offer the instruction required to certify you for the right to apply for a Connecticut pistol permit.
