The Nebraska Military Department works for the protection and safety of the residents and visitors of Nebraska. The department governs Nebraska National Guard, which has been in operation since 1854 and operates the SAPR Program. Nebraska National Guard also administers a variety of family readiness and youth programs. The Nebraska Military Department also governs the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, which is also known as NEMA and works to reduce the loss of lives and properties in Nebraska. Nebraska Emergency Management Agency responds to emergencies and natural and man-made disasters. The agency operates planning, exercise and training programs through its preparedness division.
