The Office of the New York State Attorney General is the chief civil legal officer of the state. It is the principal public official in the state of New York with the authority to defend and protect the public interest in the courts. The office seeks to enforce the public interest by civil investigations and lawsuits. The Office of the New York State Attorney General represents the state and its agencies, the governor and other state officials and the legislature in a range of litigations. With an office in Buffalo, N.Y., it maintains criminal, public advocacy, and appeals and opinions divisions. The office additionally has a legislative and intergovernmental affairs bureau that is responsible for the preparation of the attorney general s legislative program and its submission to the state senate and assembly, as well as the coordination of significant communications between the attorney general s office and the New York state legislature.
