Concrete Facts 1.Concrete is composed of three basic materials: Gravel, Sand, and Cement. 2.Concrete is measured in strength by the term P.S.I. (Pounds Per Square Inch) 3.Concrete comes in many different strengths. a. 2000 P.S.I. mix primarily for footings and foundations b. 2500 P.S.I. mix primarily for footings and foundations c. 3000 P.S.I. mix used for doing flatwork (Patio, Slab, Driveways) d. 3200 P.S.I. mix used for doing flatwork (Patio, Slab, Driveways) e. 3500 P.S.I. mix the best mix for doing flatwork f. 4000 P.S.I. mix commercial grade that is used in road and commercial structures 4.All flatwork must have a proper base of gravel to ensure water drainage beneath the concrete. Also must contain expansion joints, to allow for the expansion and contraction during the winter and summer months. Expansion joints can be made of felt, pressure treated lumber, or P.V.C. placed no more than 10-15 feet apart. 5.For freshly poured concrete to cure or reach its maximum strength it must be sprayed with water for the first two weeks up to 3 times a day. What this method does is slow down the drying time by cooling the surface and also permeating into the concrete. Absolutely no vehicles should cross our concrete for up to 7 days. People may walk on it after 48 hours. 6.Absolutely no chemicals, calcium chloride, rock salt, or acid should be applied over the concrete. This will enhance a condition that is called scaling. This looks like patches of loose sand and cement covering the surface of the concrete. For any further questions regarding the concrete and/or care of Your new concrete please call us.
