Bay Metro Transit began operations in 1974. It is currently organized under Michigan Public Act 196 of 1986. The company serves all of Bay County, Mich., with 447 square miles and approximately 110,000 residents. Bay Metro provides services including fixed-route service, countywide demand-response service, tripper service, contract service and special community events. The transit system facility was built in 1981 and is located in Bay City, Mich. This facility contains the administrative, maintenance and operations functions of the transit system. The BMTA opened an inter-modal terminal in downtown Bay City in 1991. This terminal is the central transfer point for all BMTA fixed routes. It also serves as the terminal for intercity bus routes run by Greyhound Lines and Indian Trails. The BMTA operates a fleet of 56 vehicles that includes 10 vans and one trolley. The majority of buses operated are low-floor models seating about 22 persons.
