University Health Care System is anchored by the 581-bed University Hospital, and serves Augusta-Richmond County and the surrounding region. University Hospital is governed by the Board of Trustees of University Health Services, which serves voluntarily to help ensure that our patients have quality medical services. Founded in 1818 as City Hospital, the hospital was first located on the 100 block of Greene Street. University has since moved through four facilities to its present location, which opened in 1970. Over the years, the campus has expanded to include the Heart & Vascular Institute and office buildings that house more than 600 private practice physicians and various treatment centers.

VA Medical Center is a two-division medical center that offers tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine and spinal cord injury. The center features more than 155 beds in its downtown and over 125 beds in its uptown division. VA Medical Center serves as a network resource for the treatment of spinal cord injury, blind rehabilitation and posttraumatic stress disorder. The center is affiliated with the Medical College of Georgia. VA Medical Center provides medical and allied health training to more than 700 students and residents annually. In addition, it operates a womens health clinic, cardiac catheterization and pulmonary function laboratories, and ambulatory surgery, intensive psychiatric community care and spinal cord injury centers. VA Medical Center is a part of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
