Just minutes west of Murrieta lies the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve, a place where locals and visitors from across the region come to enjoy the serenity of nature.

With more than 40 miles of trails, the reserve is home to wildlife such as mountain lions, deer and fox. It boasts more than 200 species of birds, and sensitive plant species can be spotted throughout.

There is something for everyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle, with equestrian and bicycle trails located in the Sylvan Meadows multi-use area. Dogs are permitted only in the Sylvan Meadows area, and must be leashed.

Or stop by the Visitor Center, which is staffed by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District. Ranger tours can be pre-arranged.

The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve is owned through a partnership between the park district, the California Department of Fish and Game, The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

Day-use fees are $1 for children ages 2 -12 and $2 for 13 and up. Annual passes can be purchased for $25. There is a $1 fee for each horse or dog entering the park.
