It also handles emergency calls and educates children through the 911 system. The Emergency Communications Center provides emergency information during disasters and other critical situations. The communications center additionally maintains paging systems for emergency personnel. It handles more than 100,000 calls for all emergency response agencies annually. The Emergency Communications Center is located in Topeka, Kan. In addition, Shawnee County operates audit finance, emergency management, recycling, public works and human resources departments.
