Pitt Street Bridge About

Pitt Street Bridge was once the primary route from Mount Pleasant to Sullivan's Island. But when the Ben Sawyer Bridge was complete, the Pitt Street route was abandoned. Now spanning just half the distance of the former bridge, Pitt Street Bridge is a pedestrian greenway that's popular with fishermen, crabbers, as well as cyclists and walkers. With a view of Peninsular Charleston and Sullivan's Island, it's a great spot to take in sunrises and sunsets. Kayakers can launch from the bridge, and pets are welcome. A bridge has stood in this location since before the Revolution. During the Civil War, the crew of the H.L. Hunley submarine crossed the bridge before test-diving the sub, which was the first combat submarine to ever successfully complete its mission. A trolley bridge was built in 1899, and a steel drawbridge was constructed for cars in 1929. The bridge was dismantled in 1945 and has since been used for recreational activities.
