Southeastern Guide Dogs is a nonprofit whose goal is "to create and nurture a partnership between a visually impaired individual and a guide dog, facilitating life's journey with mobility, independence and dignity." It has been providing partnerships between visually impaird people and dogs since 1982 and has more than 600 active guide dogs. Its 23-acre campus is located just off I-275 in rural Palmetto.
Winslow Farm Animal Sanctuary is a hidden gem on the south shore. This non-profit organization rescues and houses mistreated and abandoned animals such as horses, swans, sheep and more. The farm allows visitors to get up close to these animals and learn about them. Birthday party packages are available, and activities are held at Winslow Farm Animal Sanctuary year-round.
AWARE is a federally recognized, tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that focuses to preserve and restore wildlife. It is in the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. The center is surrounded by 3,000 acres of forest, streams and wildlife. Aware provides programs that educate guests about wildlife, including ongoing rehabilitation efforts, educational handouts, and classroom lecture information.
