Founded in 1887, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, also known as Penn Museum, has conducted more than 400 archaeological and anthropological expeditions around the world. Its three gallery floors feature materials from Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Bible Lands, Mesoamerica, Asia and the ancient Mediterranean World, as well as artifacts from native peoples of the Americas, Africa and Polynesia. The museum offers a glass-enclosed a caf and three shops that include Museum Shop, Second Site shop and Pyramid Shop for children. This living history museum depicts the life of Pilgrims and Native Americans in early-17th century Massachusetts. If you want to see where some of the first Pilgrims arrived in America, then Plymouth, Mass. is the perfect place to visit. Besides the Mayflower II, there are numerous historical places to visit here. During reenactments, the Mayflower staff members are in full Pilgrim dress and speak with the visitors like it's 1627.

Further north, the Mayflower II is located on the state pier on the Plymouth Waterfront, near Plymouth Rock and other historical sites.

Established in 1935, Smoki Museum specializes in Indian art. Located in Prescott, Ariz., it offers a wide variety of products during auction, such as Yavapai baskets, bracelets, Prescott culture pottery, jewelry, katsina dolls and kate coris paintings, to name a few. The museum often closes during the summer months and other UVM recesses, so be sure to check the website for up-to-date hours. Because of the museum's affiliation with the university, class visits occur frequently during the week, so if you want to explore the space without an influx of students, visit on a Saturday or Sunday.

Check out the Ancient exhibit, where you will see an interesting combination of everything from prehistoric Vermont objects to an Egyptian mummy. There is also an extensive Native American collection that brings together objects from thousands of years of native North and South American cultures.

Admission costs $3-$8, with discounts available for families visiting together. Students, faculty and staff of UVM and other Burlington colleges always receive free admission.

Parking and public transportation to the Fleming Museum of Art
UVM has several parking lots available for museum visitors, including the Fleming Museum Visitors' lot, the UVM Main Visitors' lot, and the Waterman Visitors' lot. All lots have metered spots. The free College Street Shuttle bus runs from the waterfront to Fletcher Allen Healthcare, which is located next door to the museum.

The museum has a cafe selling coffee and baked goods during museum hours. For something more substantial, you will be best served to get off the UVM campus and head to the Church Street Marketplace and surrounding downtown area to try one of Burlington's many fine restaurants.

Illinois State Museum was founded in 1877, and its first home was in the State Capitol building. The Museum was founded as a natural history museum with outstanding geology and biology collections. The headquarters of Illinois State Museum is in Springfield. The public museum with exhibits and educational programs is located in the State Capitol Complex on the corner of Spring and Edwards Streets. The Museums Research and Collections Center, which houses collections, research laboratories, and a Technology Learning Center is located at 1011 East Ash Street in Springfield.
