The primary focus of the NAACP continues to be the protection and enhancement of the civil rights for African Americans and other minorities by removing barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes and educating people on their constitutional rights. The NAACP is the nations oldest civil rights organization. Its Washington, D.C. bureau, established in 1941, is the legislative arm of the association, and one of the primary forces in the nations capital lobbying for civil rights.

The Continental Divide Trail Society has been working since 1978 to improve the Continental Divide Scenic Trail that extends 3,000 miles through the Rocky Mountains to Canada. Services include archived newsletters, patches and printed maps. Potential members can join by paying the annual dues of $10 to help preserve the trails for fellow hikers.

Nature Museum is located in Carriage House and features a variety of exhibits. The museum features a learning environment and provides educational opportunities. It has a collection of butterfly and moth eggs, rocks, minerals, fossils, seashells, games and habitat dioramas. Nature Museum serves various students and visitors. The museum is a part of the Cylburn Arboretum Association, which is a nonprofit organization that has more than 140 volunteers. Also known as CAA, the organization maintains gardens and trails in Baltimore. It sponsors cultural and fundraising events, such as Market Day and Chamber Music Series for children and adults. The Cylburn Arboretum Association has rooms that host meetings, receptions and workshops.

Any MLA member with less than ten years experience working in a library and who is currently employed in a library. No person may receive the Award more than once. Played an increasing leadership role in libraries and library associations, including MLA Demonstrated a commitment to the future of library service in his/her work or professional activities The purpose of the Maryland Library Association Outstanding Paraprofessional Award is to recognize a library paraprofessional or support staff member who has made a significant contribution to libraries in Maryland.
