Hi, my name is Michael Mootz, founder of Michael Mootz Candies. I started my business in the summer of 1975 by selling fudge at local fairs and farmers markets. We continue to sell at some of the same fairs 30 years later. My wife Debi became an integral part of the business when we were married in 1979. Today, along with our fudge we manufacture a full assortment of incredible chocolates. Candy has always been part of my life. My father and grandmother were both confectioners. Many of the chocolate recipes that we use today have been in the family for over 70 years. We continue to develop new products, such as our delicious hand decorated mint-meltaway cups. Our mission is to offer the best fudge, chocolates and service to our customers at an exceptionally competitive price. We take great pride in using the freshest ingredients to create our delicious confections.

Picture it! 1880! Three young brothers leave their Sicilian roots to embark on a new journey. They immigrate to Baltimore where they have relatives who find them jobs and teach them English. By 1884 they know enough English to start their own business. They decide to open a produce store. They name it "John Jeppi & Brothers." It is located on the 200 block of South Sharp Street among a strip of houses which have been converted into a large produce market. Four years pass and although the business is doing well, they decide to switch from produce to peanuts in the shell. They purchase a peanut roaster and decide they will sell the peanuts piping hot to their customers. Each week the peanuts come into Baltimores harbor on large old bay line ships from Suffolk, Virginia. The Jeppi brothers load bags of peanuts into their horse drawn wagon, roast them in their peanut roaster, and then serve them piping hot to their customers. Five years pass and the business escalates allowing them to purchase two additional roasters and expand their product line to include all types of nuts. In 1970, after a wonderfully successful run, the youngest brother, Tony Jeppi, decides to sell the company to the Claster family. (If this name sounds familiar it is because Mr. Clasters brother, John, was the producer of the popular childrens TV show, "Romper Room"). Mr. Claster is a Baltimorean married to a native of Brooklyn, New York. In 1970, the couple changes the name to "Jeppi Nuts" and moves the business to 312 North High Street. Sadly, soon after they purchase the company, Mr. Claster dies, leaving the company in Mrs. Clasters hands. She continues to run the business but decides she wants to return to New York to be closer to her family. In 1973, she places an ad in the paper listing the company for sale. It just so happens that a couple named Charlie and Stella Pavlos are in the market for a business. Stella finds three businesses in the paper for sale that day: a restaurant, a

It began, simply enough, as a retail smoke shop on West Forest Home Avenue. Victor Jazwiecki came to Milwaukee from Wloclawek, Poland at the age of 17. For roughly 11 years Victor worked as a coremaker in Milwaukees thriving foundry environment. Then, in 1928 he took a divergent path. Opening a small business of his own, a smoke shop, across the street from our current location at 1911 W. Forest Home Avenue. (Pictured below, is the salesmens car. In the background, to the right is the original building used for Victors smoke shop on Forest Home Avenue. It still stands today.) As it proved to be a successful endeavour, even through the Great Depression, Victor expanded his small space by moving to a somewhat larger building in 1941. A former auto repair shop across the street. At that time the business became,"The Only Polish Wholesale House", according to the Polish National Alliance of Milwaukee. Adding the wholesale business meant expanding its line of merchandise as well as the customer base. From cigars, cigarettes, matches, candy, gum and ice cream cones to paper supplies, tavern and bakers supplies, health & beauty aids and novelties, Victor aimed to satisfy all inquires. During this time Victor was also raising a family. With the help of his wife, Irene, they gave their three chlidren, Delores, Sylvia and Raymond the childhood that every child deserves. Raymond, the youngest, took an active role in the growing business. His two sisters to a much lesser degree. As a teenager, Raymond performed hard duties such as unloading trucks, stocking shelves and making deliveries. Under the tutaledge of his father, Raymond developed a keen sense for the business. It was in 1962 that Vics Wholesale would take on its next and greatest expansion. (Pictured at left, is the construction in progress.) Prior to this point, only minor changes took place. This time however, it involved the purchase of a neighboring property. The east wall was pushed out to add more square footage on ground level. This allowed for a lower level and a second level for apartments and offices. Stock had been piling up in the main store leaving little room for the customer. Victor had wanted to retain the retail side of the business and present a more pleasant shopping environment. Having the combination of wholesale along side the retail business presented a challenging but unique method for commerce, which made shopping at Vics Wholesale all the more special. Raymond graduated from Marquette University in June of 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. While attending the University, Raymond was in the reserves and later in April of 1956 received an honorable discharge for his service. Then, in November of that year, he married his girlfriend, Mary Ann. The two, naturally, began their own family together. Bringing to life four children, all boys in Michael, Joel, Thomas and Patrick.
