Two years after California was admitted to statehood, and the same year Oakland was founded, Mills College opened as the first women's college west of the Rockies. Since 1862, Mills has grown to become a renowned liberal arts college, known as a center for modern dance and contemporary music. Mills Hall is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This 135-acre campus, nestled in the foothills of Oakland, is a sanctuary in the middle of the city.

Considered Oakland's crown jewel, Lake Merritt is one of the largest urban fresh and saltwater lakes in the United States. It's also home to the oldest designated wildlife refuge in the U.S. Although the lake attracts thousands of migratory birds, it also attracts a wide cross-section of Oakland residents. From early in the morning to evening, when lights illuminate its 3.4-mile circumference, folks of all ages walk, run and rollerblade around the paved paths. The lake offers a bonsai garden, boathouses, a nature center and lawn bowling, and remains a popular gathering space for Oakland's active community.
