Considered Oakland's crown jewel, Lake Merritt is one of the largest urban fresh and saltwater lakes in the United States. It's also home to the oldest designated wildlife refuge in the U.S. Although the lake attracts thousands of migratory birds, it also attracts a wide cross-section of Oakland residents. From early in the morning to evening, when lights illuminate its 3.4-mile circumference, folks of all ages walk, run and rollerblade around the paved paths.
