Crestwood Park includes four tennis courts, swings, a sand pit with digging tools, a double seesaw and a play set.
One of the gems of Northbrook Park District, the massive Techny Prairie Park and Fields offers batting cages, fishing, four baseball diamonds, a skate park, trails, a nine-hole golf course with a golf shop, a sled hill and more. It's also a great venue to see local flora and fauna, with fields filled with roses, lilies and swallows, dragonflies and even hawks flying overhead.
This no-kill shelter works to place homeless dogs and cats. Heartland Animal Shelter also offers dog training classes and regularly sponsors educational events.
The 22,000 square-foot store sells clothes, electronics, home goods, furniture, sporting goods, books and movies, among other items.
“It’s a treasure hunt where you don’t know what you’ll find in the store,” says Cheryl Lightholder, communications director of the regional office. “We have designer items and new products from national retailers.”
Indian Ridge Park was built on the grounds of the former Indian Ridge School. The space includes swings, a large play set with slides and climbing spaces, a basketball court, a softball field and open green space used for soccer and other activities.
The Glenkirk Foundation is dedicated to helping people with developmental disabilities and their families. The organization supports 49 programs and serves over 1,100 infants, children, adults, and seniors every year. It provides life-enriching experiences to help those with developmental disabilities gain the autonomy they want and deserve. Glenkirk offers many opportunities for involvement, from donating money or in-kind items to volunteering.
The Village Presbyterian Church has evolved over more than 100 years from the small group of worshipers who met in a railroad station in the late 1800s. Since 1949, the church has inhabited its current location at Shermer Road and Church Street downtown. Both contemporary and traditional services are offered, as well as outdoor services from June to September on the church's beautifully landscaped grounds.
This local branch of the worldwide Jehovah's Witnesses' organization holds a nontrinitarian Christian belief system. The Northbrook Kingdom Hall holds services in English and Korean on Sunday and Spanish on Monday. Service meetings take place in English on Tuesday, Spanish on Wednesday and Korean on Friday.
This outreach-oriented church supports nine missionary families and regularly invites missionaries to speak to the congregation. Northbrook Covenant Church also offers a variety of programs for children and families, including a Friday evening group where kindergarteners to fifth graders can learn about the Bible through games, crafts and theater.
The Northbrook Park District's Leisure Center is located near the intersection of Walters Avenue and Landwehr Road. The building formerly housed Indian Ridge School, which was closed in 1982 due to declining enrollment. The building became a center for recreational programming, including general recreation classes, Sunshine Preschool, special events, birthday parties and rentals. In 1986, the Park District added the Northbrook Theatre. The building also houses the Senior Center and the Performing Arts Department.
After the 10:15am Sunday service, St. Giles Episcopal Church hosts a coffee hour where congregation members can talk while the kids play. The church hosts many events, including potluck dinner, ice cream socials and brunch for new members. Nursery care is available during services, and a variety of Bible study programs are offered for all ages ranging from three-year-olds to high school students and adults.
This location is the regional headquarters for the 130-year-old Jewish not-for-profit organization ORT, which helps promote education and schooling worldwide through monetary aid and service projects. The office coordinates various fund-raising events and local educational-related campaigns.
Congregation Beth Shalom is a Jewish synagogue in the Conservative, Egalitarian tradition. A part of the community since 1967, Congregation Beth Shalom has been providing meaningful religious services, religious education and celebrating life-cycle events with its members every day of the week for the past 43 years. Congregation Beth Shalom has also established itself in the North Shore community through its outreach and charity programs across Chicagoland.
