Founded by German immigrants in 1872, the church was officially established the German Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church on Sept. 4, 1881. Today known as Zion Lutheran, the church, a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has a congregation of more than 1,200 people. It has been on its current site since 1955; the old church is currently home to the Tinley Park Historical Society.

Communion services are held at 5pm on Saturdays and at 8:30am and 11 am on Sundays. (During the summer months, the later morning service is held at 10am instead of 11am.)

Also on Sundays, a contemporary service designed as a "seekers service" for new churchgoers is held at 9:45am.

With a congregation of more than 3,700 families, St. Stephen, Deacon & Martyr, is one of the largest and newest Catholic churches in the area. Reverend James Finno, better known as Father Jay, is pastor. He founded the church 11 years ago. Father Greg Warmuz is associate pastor.

Mass is offered at 8am Monday through Saturday and again at 5pm on Saturday evening. On Sundays, Mass is held at 7am, 8:30am, 10am and 11:30am, with a Polish-language service available at 1pm.

Next to the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center and park district offices, the district-owned White Water Canyon Water Park is a colorful and popular series of water slides, pools, play areas and the interactive fountains of the spray ground. The main pool features zero-depth entry, meaning it slants into the water like a beach. It also has a one-meter diving board, a three-meter drop slide and an interactive children's play area. There's also 600-foot lazy river for relaxing on single or double inner tubes that runs through the park and some paths with splash buckets. Sand play areas, locker rooms, restrooms and a full-service concession stand are also available. Birthday party packages are offered.

Offering recreational programs for those with special needs, the South Suburban Special Recreation Association (SSSRA) was founded in 1973 and provides weekly programming, day camps and sports teams.  Special events, such as overnight trips and activities, are also scheduled throughout the year. The SSSRA is associated with eight local park districts and three recreation and parks departments -- residents of these districts receive lower membership fees, though anyone is welcome to join.
