The Fairfax County Department of Transportation operates under the government of Fairfax County, Va. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation plans, coordinates, funds, implements and sustains a multimodal transportation system for the county in order to smoothen the movement of people and goods. The department administers a bike program that includes the identification of roadways that can be retrofitted with on-road bike and wide curb lanes for a better accommodation of bicycles. In addition, it supports a community residential program partnership with residential development units and associations to promote the use of alternative modes of transportation. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation administers a program that provides commuters with free ridesharing information, including ride matching assistance to form and join carpools.
