The agency was established in 1956 to meet the needs of children and adults suffering from mental disorders. Mobile Association for Retarded Citizens is a member of various community-based agencies. The agency is also a member of the United Way of South Alabama and the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. It promotes research in prevention, education and training of persons suffering from mental disorders.
