Founded in 1910, the Ankeny Fire Department is a full-service emergency response agency. It provides fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, fire prevention and education, fire investigation and other related services to the residents, property owners and visitors of Ankeny. Department staff includes approximately 80 men and women who serve in full-time and paid-per-call capacities, as well as administrative staff. The fire department consists of three divisions: fire suppression, emergency medical services, and fire prevention.
The City of Ames Fire Department No. 3 was dedicated October 25, 2002. It houses three trucks and about five firefighters are on duty at any given time.

The department serves approximately 63,200 residents in the 27.9-square-mile incorporated area of the town, including the University of Iowa main campus. It operates three fires stations, maintains a command vehicle and staffs three engine companies and one rescue/truck company. The department also collaborates with many other fire protection agencies at the local, state and federal levels.
