Incorporated under the laws of Florida in 1974, the Florida Governor s Council on Indian Affairs is a private, nonprofit corporation. The council s responsibilities include advising the governor of Florida on matters affecting the rights and interests of the Indian people in the state and representing the interests of the Indian people of Florida before various state agencies. Additionally, the council provides technical assistance for the educational, economic, social and cultural advancement of the Indian people within the State of Florida. It is also responsible for the allocation and distribution of funds to economically disadvantaged, underemployed and unemployed American Indians, native Alaskans and native Hawaiians.
