The Stanford family is most famous for building Stanford University, but before that accomplishment, they were just a family, living the good life in Sacramento. Leland was a railroad man who became the governor of California. The mansion has been lovingly restored to its 1860s splendor using both original pieces and reproductions. A visit to what used to be the family home is a must for anyone who enjoys California history, the railroad or both, however, small children who may become bored, and those who have difficulty climbing staircases should consider visiting one of Sacramento's other attractions instead.

Best and Worst Time to Visit The Leland Stanford Mansion
There really is no best or worst time to visit the museum, however, tours are provided on the hour, so arrive early and sign in, otherwise, a visitor may have to wait until the next tour group to go inside. Groups are limited to no more than 12 people.

Must See/Do at The Leland Stanford Mansion
Since the tours are guided, every group will see every important part of the house, but a visitor should take note of beautifully crafted details in the furnishings, many of which are antiques. Also, take note of the gorgeous lace window treatments, which were custom designed for the mansion.

Admission to The Leland Stanford Mansion
Admission is free. Those who want to see the home should call first, however, because the museum is also California's Protocol Center, which means California's governor hosts gatherings and meetings there, and it is sometimes closed to the public.

Parking and Public Transportation to The Leland Stanford Mansion
There is plentiful street parking near the mansion, and there are also parking garages within walking distance. Sacrament Regional Transit's Blue Line, Green Line, Yellow Line, and buses 30 and 38 drop patrons near the mansion, but call first to ensure accuracy.

Food at The Leland Stanford Mansion
There is no food served at the mansion, however, the downtown area is home to a wide array of nearby dining options including Indian, Thai, Chinese, steakhouses, and fast food.

Insider Tip For Visitors to The Leland Stanford Mansion
There is no photography allowed inside, so leave all cameras behind and ensure pockets or purses are ample enough to hold cellphones. It will be requested that all electronics be put away before the tours begin.
