The Habitat for Humanity ReStores are retail outlets for new and gently-used building supplies, which are donated by generous individuals, corporations and contractors. They are open to the public and general contractors to purchase items, such as building supplies, carpet, appliances and furniture, at significant discounts, often 30 to 70 percent below average retail prices. Funds from ReStore sales are put back into building more Habitat homes throughout St. Joseph County and fulfilling the Habitat mission of providing simple, decent and affordable homes for hard-working, low-income families in our community.

One individual, Peggy Burlison, the parent of a child with a disability, started Bridges of Indiana in August of 2000. Bridges was established to serve only her son and a small group of other families within the community. By early 2002, the business was moved into a centrally located office building and Jonathan Burlison, Peggy s son, joined the business. The mission of the company is to provide the services necessary to allow individuals with disabilities, with the support of their families and friends, to live, learn and work where they choose within the community. Some of the services the company offers include state waiver programs, family settings, independent and supported living services, respite services and attendant care for the aged and disabled. Bridges of Indiana has locations in Evansville, Terre Haute and Vincennes, Ind.

Pathfinder Services, founded in 1966, is a nonprofit human services organization that serves more than 200 adults with disabilities. It operates a child care center that provides First Steps early intervention services for children with developmental delays. It offers a life after school program that provides assistance to students transitioning from school to work. The organization offers a transitional housing program that serves homeless families and provides several services, such as budgeting, employment assistance, housing and life skills training. Damar Services is one of the oldest private nonprofit providers of residential services to children with developmental disabilities in Indiana and provides a variety of living options and support services for children and adults in their own communities. The organization develops services that teach social and behavioral skills to cope with life and to prepare individuals to live as independently as possible.
