The Meriden Humane Society is the city's no-kill animal shelter. It shares a fast-moving, barking, mewing building with Meriden's Animal Control, tucked away on Murdock Avenue on the east side of town. The society relies wholly on private contributions, running independent of state or city funding. Cats and dogs are available for adoption for a fee to those who are screened. Dog adoption fees run from $250 - $350 and cat adoptions cost $25 - $75. Donations of linens, pet and cleaning supplies are requested. Volunteer dog-walkers are also in need.
Founded in June 2009, My City Kitchen offers recreational classes in cooking and nutrition for children ages 6 to 17. Chef Kashia Cave, founder and president of this nonprofit organization, is a graduate of the Connecticut Culinary Institute and the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners. Her hands-0n technique teaches kids how to prepare and eat healthy foods from beef Stroganoff to vegan lasagna. Classes are divided by age group and kept small (10 students maximum) to ensure safety and individual attention. The menu and ingredients can be adapted for children with food allergies.
Women & Families Center is a human service agency that offers services for women and families to foster independence and empowerment. Services include crisis prevention, sexual assault crisis services, before- and after-school programs, and open DOHR - developing opportunities in human resource employment. A variety of resources are available here for both youth and adults.
This used bookstore sells books, puzzles, DVDs and other items donated to the Meriden Public Library. Opened in 2007, the store is run by volunteers. All proceeds go to fund programming and improvements at the library.

North Italian Home Club is a large gathering space that is open Thursday-Sunday for group gatherings and social functions within the Italian community; however, all friends are welcome to join in.
