Kentucky River Coal Corporation, established in 1927, is a dealer of coal, oil and gas and timber resources. These resources are leased to production companies for harvesting. The corporation collects royalties on its oil and natural gas reserves in eastern Kentucky and has joint ventures with Equitable Production Company to produce oil and natural gas. Kentucky River also leases property for timbering, sometimes selling the timber outright or on a percentage basis. The corporation owns 200,000 acres of coal reserves mainly in Perry, Leslie, Knott and Letcher Counties. Reserves are also owned in Breathitt and Harlan Counties. Annual cash grants are given by the corporation to every grade and high school in the four county area in which its major properties lie. In addition to educational institutions, Kentucky River donates to volunteer fire departments, hospices, community ministries, churches and various other charities.
