The department of public works has 74 full-time employees, including mechanics, equipment operators and engineers. The department's various divisions are responsible for maintaining roads, buildings, sewers and vehicles, as well as planning future town projects.
Staff in the engineering division work on construction of streets, sidewalks, bridges, culverts and sewers, and provide surveys and other work for future capital improvement projects. Employees in the Roads & Streets division maintain and resurface roads, repair traffic signals and remove snow and ice.
Staff in the facility maintain cleanliness and make repairs in 45 town buildings. Employees in the Fleet division keep vehicles in working order, including police cruisers and vehicles for the Board of Education. Staff in the commercial solid waste division run a leaf composting facility, residential transfer station and commercial solid waste collection program. On the first floor you'll find the Assessor's Office, the Tax Collector, the Registrar of Voters, and the Town Clerk's Office. The First Selectman's Office, the Public Works Department, the Parking Bureau, and the Fire Marshal are on the second floor.
The Board Room and Auditorium host many public meetings, including the regular meetings of the Town Council, Board of Selectmen, and Board of Finance. The Highway Division is one of three divisions of the Department of Physical Services under the direction of the Town Engineer/Manager of Physical Services. The Highway Division is responsible for maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, drainage systems, sanitary sewers, traffic controls, sidewalks and other features of the town’s infrastructure system. Overall maintenance and construction is accomplished through the use of in-house labor and equipment working in conjunction with contractual entities. Resolution of pertinent inquiries and service requests from citizens is also coordinated by the Highway Division. Services include:
- Snow and ice removal during winter storm events.
- Street sweeping and roadside mowing.
- Preparation and administration of the town street paving program.
- Catch basin cleaning and sanitary sewer main flushing.
- Joint operation of the bulky waste sand and gravel operation.
- Maintenance of town-owned traffic signals, application of all pavement markings, and installation of all regulatory/advisory traffic signs.
- Maintenance and construction of the town’s extensive storm drainage system.
