About FotoTechnika The late 1970s: FotoTechnika was only a dream. John and Saundra Howard, inspired by their studies at the University of North Florida and their desire to work together, envisioned the melding of graphic, photographic and fine art services into a single hybrid visual arts company ; in fact the name FotoTechnika ( f -t t k -nih-k h ) was a contrived company name created for a college graphic arts course. John discovered his love for the photographic darkroom while Saundra developed her artistic talents in both fine and graphic arts. FotoTechnika was incorporated in 1981 but remained a part-time venture until 1987 when the lab was established as a full-service venture at its current location. In 1990 Brian Wanta joined the team as a corporate partner, adding his multi-media talents to the darkroom and graphic arts skills that were evolving with the rest of the staff. In the early to mid 1990s larger photo labs started using digital retouching, but in those early days of electronic imaging, digital image quality did not compare affordably to that of hand-enlarged custom prints or optically produced machine prints ( and in some cases it still cant ). The owners of FotoTechnika patiently waited until new digital printers and scanners met their criteria for superior image quality and in 1997, technology started to catch up with the original dream when Brian started experimenting with large format inkjet printing. Since 2000, success has been achieved in part due to diverse investments in digital equipment, but there are other reasons why FotoTechnika has flourished. Several niche markets that have regional and even national appeal have been nurtured and every employee has been encouraged to experiment and transform their previous darkroom and artistic talents into marketable digital skills. FotoTechnikas specialty products include ultra high quality inkjet prints of paintings ( giclees ) and reproduction of fine art photography and historic prints, which can be produced on traditional silver halide media, fine art papers and canvas or as beautiful one-of-a-kind coffee table books. By 2002 FotoTechnika had become part photo lab and part digital printmaker and Brian was on his way to becoming a Giclee Guru. Later that year the business was reorganized and renamed FotoTechnika Fine Art Imaging, which more accurately reflects the companys focus and original philosophy. Growth and expansion of services has continued and now FotoTechnika offers a comprehensive array of digital services especially geared to the arts, while continuing to provide traditional photo lab services that are increasingly difficult to find. As technology has changed, the knowledge and experience FotoTechnika employees have amassed is impressive. While learning new technology, skills and talents, the processes that are the roots of FotoTechnika have not been forgotten. In fact, the abilities of the crew at FotoTechnika Fine Art Imaging go way beyond that of lab technicians. They consider themselves artisans, aspiring to a level of craftsmanship known to 18th & 19th century guilds. The master plan is to pass on those skills and abilities, as well as a desire to pursue excellence, to the next generation of FotoTechnika craftsmen. A passion for the craft, close relationships with customers and employees, and a persistent desire to improve have been FotoTechnikas formula for success.
