Universalist National Memorial Church is one of a kind in the nations capital. It is a parish drawn diversely from the metropolitan Washington area, yet was built to serve as the national representative of the Universalist Church of American, which merged in 1961 with the American Unitarian Association to form the Unitarian Univeralist Association of Congregations. UNMC is now a proud member congregation of the UUA, an association of more than one thousand congregations across the continent, bound together not by a common theology, but by a common covenant to seek truth in freedom. Each congregation within the UUA is self-governing and self-financing. The Board of Trustees adopted a resolution on strengthening the churchs affiliation with the UUA in April 2003. Our particular community is both liberal Christian and Universalist; that is, liberal in that there is no creedal test to become a member of this church, Universalist in that we affirm that no soul is forever lost from the all-conquering love of God, Christian in that the focus of our religious journey is the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. The mission statement adopted by the congregation of this church states that we seek to create a loving community for worship and service in the spirit of Jesus Christ, to welcome all and respect individual beliefs as we grow together. The Universalists were so named because they made universal salvation the cornerstone of their Christian faith, a religiously democratizing proposition, traceable to the 3rd century theologian, Origen, and the apostolic age. Strongly rooted in New England and in the society produced by the American Revolution, later Universalists were prominent social reformers and leaders in education, publishing, and business. In In Washington DC, the Universalists were a presence before the Civil War, before relocating to the present site in 1929. The building, designed by Francis H. Allen and Charles Collens of Boston, who were the architects for the Riverside Church in New York City and the Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago, has its roots in Romanesque architecture derived from English, French, and Italian traditions. The acoustics are considered excellent, and the stained glass windows unique.

Mission Statement The mission of Holy Trinity Catholic Church is to be a community of disciples of Christ that, guided by the Holy Spirit, brings Gods transforming love to the world. We live and act in communion with the universal Catholic Church and with the Church of Washington under the leadership of its Archbishop. We strive to implement the vision of the Second Vatican Council and to foster close and effective collaboration between the members of the parish community, be they lay, religious, or clergy. Our corporate worship is the heart of the parish, the center of our life, our first school of spirituality, and the source from which our power flows. We strive for active participation by all in the celebration of the liturgy.

The First Baptist, DC of Washington, is conscious of its location in the heart of the nations capital city and its unique opportunity to minister to the passing parade of people from across the nation and around the world who are part of Washingtons life. The transient visitor may want a worship experience. The area resident may need a fellowship of service. Our ministry also seeks to cut across any barriers that tend to divide Baptists nationally or internationally, and to offer an open place for Christian expression and endeavor. First Baptist Church ( FBC ) is a congregation committed to the belief that each individual, through the power of Christ, can be restored, renewed, redeemed. As the magnificent Redemption Window in the sanctuary is central to our sanctuarys architectural design, so is redemptive faith central to our churchs mission and ministry. And at the center of that mission and ministry is a congregation at worship.

History The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., is the pre-eminent Marian shrine of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. This beautiful votive church of pilgrimage, older than some of the states of the Union, honors the Blessed Mother under the title of the Immaculate Conception as the Patroness of the United States. Built as the medieval cathedrals of Europe, without structural steel beams, framework, or columns, the Shrine is entirely of stone, brick, tile and mortar. It is a blending of techniques, both ancient and new, in which architecture mingles with symbol. Envisioned by its founder, Bishop Thomas J. Shahan (1857-1932) as a monument to artistic truth that would speak with divine eloquence,b the Shrine is home to the largest collection of contemporary ecclesiastical art in the United States. Amid a rich patina of mosaics, sculptures, and artistic renderings, the more than 65 chapels and oratories reflect not only the devotional traditions of the American Church but also the rich ethnic mC)lange of the Universal Church. In 1990, Pope John Paul II (1920-2005) named the National Shrine a minor basilica, the 36th in the United States.
