KenCrest was founded in 1905 in Philadelphia by Sister Maria Roeck, a Lutheran deaconess, under the name of Kensington Dispensary. Its original mission was to aide in the treatment of tuberculosis. In 1955, the organization shifted its mission and focus to the guidance of Sister Grace Jones and began serving people with mental retardation and other disabilities. KenCrest merged its two divisions in 1970 and became recognized by as KenCrest Centers. Over the past 35 years, the agency has broadened its area of service to include the five-county metropolitan Philadelphia-area and Delaware. In 1995, KenCrest convened the first national conference in the United States on medically fragile, technology-dependent children. KenCrest is based in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
