A Salem presence since 1850, the YMCA serves the community by offering fitness facilities and exercise classes for adults, along with summer and day camps for children. Children can enroll in one of 60 camps or the Early Learning Center -- a year-round day care center for toddlers and school-age children.
The Creative Arts Center -- a program run out of historic Ames Memorial Hall, will involve children in every aspect of creating and performing live theater. It will also allow children to explore painting, sculpture and pottery making. With the Creative Arts Center, the YMCA hopes to enhance the legacy of Ames Memorial Hall, which was an influential place of meeting in the late 1800s.
North Shore Tennis & Squash Club is a non-profit organization offering facilities and programs for tennis and squash players of all ages. The facility includes two indoor courts, two outdoor clay courts, one squash court, a sauna and an exercise room with treadmills, weights and more. Founded in 1965, North Shore Tennis & Squash Club offers singles and doubles programs as well as a mixed doubles round robin every Tuesday from noon to 2 pm October through May. The club also offers private and semi-private lessons, youth clinics and summer camps.
The Rockett Arena and O'Keefe Center at Salem State University is a multi-purpose facility with athletic offices and programs. The location is home for the SSU Vikings and intramural programs and includes ice hockey, swimming, diving, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, softball and golf. The Mass Motorcycle Organization is a nonprofit membership and advocacy group, promoting awareness and preservation of the rights of motorcyclists. The group distributes signs promoting safety ("Motorcycles are everywhere"), and lobbies all levels of government in favor of non-discriminatory regulation of motorcycles.
Enterprise Center is located in the south campus of Salem State University, off of Loring Avenue. The center is a resource for small business owners and entrepreneurs, offering free workshops, conferences and business counseling. It also holds a business plan competition.
Since 1990, North Shore Driving School has educated drivers on the rules of the road. The school reviews its competitors' prices each week to ensure it offers the lowest price. Each session runs for two weeks, with classes meeting Monday through Friday, from 6pm to 9pm. Private road lessons are scheduled seven days a week, from 8am to 6pm.
Since 2000, Streetsmart Drivers of Salem has been the choice of the North Shore to learn the rules of the road. It offers a cutting-edge curriculum, complete with interactive classes and plenty of road time to make sure you pass your driver's license test the first time. In addition to driver's education classes, Streetsmart provides first aid and CPR training sessions for students and parents.
