The operations and services of St. Joseph Orchard, Walnut City WineWorks, and WineWorks Oregon encompass the full cycle of grape farming and winemaking - all of it beginning in the vineyards of the famed Willamette Valley. In all we do to bring premium wines to the consumer, including winemaking, marketing, and distribution, it is our long experience in vineyard development and management that defines our products. This map shows the vineyards that produce wines for our community of vintners, and gives an overview of the Willamette Valley. Over the past two decades partners John Gilpin and John Davidson have planted and grafted over a million vines in the Willamette Valley. Through St. Joseph Orchards, Inc. the parent company of Walnut City WineWorks and WineWorks Oregon they have consulted on every aspect of vineyard management with the exception of brokering fruit. They currently own or manage over 200 acres of vineyards.

Established in 1972 by founder and southern Oregon grape growing pioneer Dick Troon, the winery is now owned and operated by the Martin family. With an incredible new tasting room and winery completed in summer 2005, this is the preeminent facility in southern Oregon. Reminiscent of a French villa, this multi-building complex has some distinctly contemporary influences. Details like copper gutters, tile roofs, and extensive cedar work, serve to accentuate some of the traditional aspects. Inside you will find hand-scraped hickory floors, granite countertops, and a commercial kitchen, leaving no doubt that attention to detail is important to us. With unique experiences like providing accompanying hors doeuvres for tasting, brunches throughout the summer, winemakers dinners, cooking classes and numerous other events throughout the year, this is a cant miss stop.Making only small lots ( mostly under 300 cases ) of: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah among others, allows us to have new and interesting wines ready for you every time you visit us. Our winemaking philosophy has always been traditional and minimalist. We continue to strive to bring only the best fruit into the winery from small estate vineyards and to let the nature of the grapes express themselves. Our goal is to make the perfect wine, to make no compromises in our approach and our effort to achieve this.In the vineyard, we follow organic principles and aspire to a closed loop, sustainable farming environment. No herbicides or pesticides are used, and all tending of the vines is done by hand. The goal is the perfect fruit. We have recently planted 16 acres of new varietals which include: Primitivo, Petite Syrah, Rousanne, Marsanne, and Sangiovese. Other acreage planted includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Viognier, and Cabernet Franc.

Both Ron and Marj Vuylsteke are native Oregonians. Ron was an electronics engineer at Tektronix in the early 1960s when a bumper crop of blackberries at the family home led to a gallon of blackberry wine. The result was tasty and the Vuylstekes family winemaking heritage was reborn. Ron and Marj decided to take the dramatic step of pursuing commercial winemaking and founded Oak Knoll Winery With the scarcity of Oregon vineyards, the first vintages Oak Knoll produced were an array of grape and fruit wines. Technical winemaking information was hard to come by, and "seat of the pants" winemaking was the norm in the early 1970s. Growing conditions and vineyards in the northern Willamette Valley are much closer to the cooler regions of Europe than they are to California. The wine courses and advice coming from California schools and the wine trade were geared entirely for warmer conditions. Therefore, growing grapes and making wine in the Willamette Valley presented new challenges to the American wine industry ; a new world of discoveries about vines and wines began to emerge from northern Oregon based on the trials, errors, and successes of these determined winemakers. Ron and Marj have been actively involved in regional and statewide community and wine industry organizations. In the late 1970s, Ron served on the organizing committee that created the Oregon Winegrowers Association. In the early 1980s, the Oregon Wine Advisory Board was formed to direct the states joint wine marketing, winemaking and viticultural research efforts. Ron was appointed to the original board and served for six years. Marj has been extremely active in countless Hillsboro area community and charitable organizations. The Oak Knoll Winery has always been a family operated business, with Marj and the children being involved since the first crush. From unloading flatbed trucks filled with berries to hand labeling bottles ; and from filling orders after school to learning about the process of winemaking, there is always something to do around a winery. Today, the second generation has stepped in to carry on the tradition in Ron and Marjs footsteps. Head Winemaker, Jeff ( a cousin ) took the reins in 2001 after working at the winery for 17 years. During his tenure he spent several years learning the craft from Ron, and then served as the Assistant Winemaker. Step-son, Greg now oversees the company as president after holding executive positions at Moonstruck Chocolates and Marsee Baking. Many of the other children are also working at various wine operations up and down the West Coast. Oldest son, Ron II worked at Tualatin Vineyards and Sokol Blosser Winery before becoming a consultant at several operations in the Napa Valley. He was then named Winemaker at Tudal Vineyards. Steve is the President of SakeOne. Youngest son, Doug spent some time at Rex Hill Vineyards before becoming Assistant Winemaker at Sokol Blosser Winery where he now resides.
