Established in 1884, Central Prison is one of the first-built prisons in North Carolina. It is spread over an area of more than 30 acres and is enclosed by a double-wire fence with razor ribbon on top. Central Prison s facilities include a plate fabrication unit, print shop, mental health care wings, and a more than 85-bed acute care hospital with a pharmacy, mobile surgical unit, operating rooms and X-ray laboratories. It offers various job assignments, including barbering, janitorial work, and kitchen, laundry and canteen labor for inmates according to their skill levels.
