Verde Canyon Railroad is a heritage railway near Clarkdale, Ariz. Opened in 1912 as the Verde Valley Railway, it was built to support the copper mines in Jerome, Ariz. Passengers aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad can enjoy views of wildlife, waterfowl, unique rock formations and Sinagua Indian ruins. During the 40-mile round trip, that usually takes three-to-four hours, the train passes through a 680-foot man-made tunnel and over a covered railroad trestle, as well as several other trestles bridging canyons of the Verde River. Excursion trains depart from Verde Canyon Railroads new depot in Clarkdale year-round, however, the schedule, changes according to seasons.
